Herreid-Selby Area came up short in the battle of the undefeated as the Lady Wolverines fell to Summit 62-38 in Aberdeen on Tuesday, Jan. 29. Ranked first in the state for Class B, Summit pulled away from a tied up game midway through the first quarter to outscore H-SA 33 to nine in the rest of the first half.
“Summit is the top rated team in the State B polls and they proved it Tuesday night,” said Coach Dean Schwartz. “They made six threes in the second quarter alone and shot nine of 14 for the game. After the game, their coach commented that was their best performance so far this year.”
Winners of the State B championship title last year, the Lady Eagles are known for their defensive skills and those skills caused the Lady Wolverines some challenges.
“We, on the other hand, did not play our best,” Schwartz said. “We went one for 12 beyond the arc and could not get the ball inside because of their sagging man defense. We also had 21 turnovers to their nine. It was hard to match up with their two six-foot guards who could shoot the three and also penetrate and pass. We tried a 1-3-1 zone but they pass the ball well and find their outside shooters. We did play with them the second half but it was a little too late. “
The Lady Wolverines were up 6-4 in the first quarter before Summit hit five unanswered baskets. McKenzie Frank nailed a buzzer beater from beyond the arc to leave the score 9-14 at the quarter stop. Frank hit another basket early in the second quarter, but no other Wolverine connected until the final minute and a half of the quarter when Shauni Schwartz added a pair of baskets. Meanwhile, Summit added six treys, two field goals and a free throw to go ahead 15-37 at the half.
H-SA starting connecting in the third quarter, outscoring the Eagles 14 to 13 as five Lady Wolverines found the basket.  Summit outscored H-SA 12 to nine in the final quarter. Kelsey Quaschnick led the Lady Wolverines in the fourth as she added all six of her points for the game.
Schwartz led H-SA with 10 points and 13 rebounds while Logan O’Farrell, 19, and Kalissa Pereboom, 16, paced Summit.
Others grabbing some of H-SA’s 30 rebounds were Haylee Biel, six, Taylor Madden, five, and Frank, three. Summit had 32 rebounds.
Steals for H-SA added up to nine led by Frank and Madden, both with three, while the Eagles tallied 17 steals. Schwartz had four of H-SA’s five blocks and Summit had nine blocks.
H-SA committed 14 fouls compared to 13 by Summit.
