The Herreid/Selby Area Wolverines traveled to Onida last week Tuesday to face the Sully Buttes Chargers in a YTC contest. The Chargers brought in a 7-6 record, while the Wolverines were 7-7 entering the contest.
The first quarter was extremely fast paced, with both teams getting off to good starts, especially from behind the arc. The quarter featured five lead changes in the opening two minutes of the quarter and a total of eight three pointers, with five of those eight coming from the Wolverines. Five different players would hit threes in the quarter and Herreid/Selby Area would lead 26-21 after one.
The second quarter would be much slower paced. Lane Rossow and Brayden Wittler would exchange buckets before a Brady Vander Vorst three would give the Wolverines a 31-23 lead with two minutes gone in the quarter. Scott Senftner and Cody Nelson would each hit buckets to cut the lead in half, but Dakota Thorstenson and Cooper Schaefbauer would do the same and the lead would be right back to eight at 35-27 with three and a half left in the third. Lewis Hofer would hit the game’s next three buckets to give the Chargers a mini 6-0 run and cut the lead to two at 35-33 with 90 seconds left. Nick Larson would hit a three pointer with just less than a minute left to close out the scoring and the Wolverines would lead 38-33 going into the break.
The third quarter would start off with Lane Rossow hitting a three pointer to push the lead back to eight. Josh Lamb and Kennedy Kosters would exchange buckets and a Larson free throw would push the lead to nine, the largest at that point. Wittler would answer with a three to cut it to six and following a Zach Geller bucket, Wittler would hit another three to cut it to five at 46-41 with three minutes left in the third. Following a Geller free throw to make it 47-41, Senftner would have an opportunity to cut it to three with a couple free throws, but both would miss to leave the lead at six. Rossow would end the quarter just like he started it, nailing another three with eight seconds left to make it 50-41 at the end of three.
The Chargers would score the first points of the fourth quarter on a Hofer bucket to cut it to seven, but that would be as close as they would get the rest of the way and the Wolverines would come away with a 69-57 victory.
The Wolverines were led by Larson’s 19 points, four assists and three steals. Thorstenson added twelve points and pulled down 18 rebounds; Rossow had eleven points, Brady Vander Vorst nine points and four assists; Geller eight points and Cooper Schaefbauer seven points and six assists.21 of Herreid/Selby Area’s 27 free throw attempts came in the fourth quarter; while they converted16 of them for the contest.
